Chapter 8

Sera stood there, watching Bas disappear into the forest and could only stand there and watch. She felt just as shocked as he had been. Of all the things she had been expecting, finding Bastian’s long-lost mother hadn’t been one of them.

“Let him go,” Layard said. “It will be a lot for him to —”

Sera surprised them both by slapping him, hard. “How could you do this to him?” she cried. “You’re like a father to him, yet you do nothing but break his heart.”

Layard rubbed his cheek, his nose still bleeding from where Bas had struck him too. He then raised his hands in surrender. “I’ve only done what needed to be done to keep everyone safe.”

The woman came over. “Perhaps I...”

“I doubt you’ll help matters,” Sera snapped. She never expected to meet her mother-in-law, let alone under these circumstances.

“Kayleigh, this is Serafina Valeon,” Layard said. “Bastian’s wife.”

Kayleigh stared at Sera, touching her face. “You’re beautiful. I’m happy my son found...”

Sera shoved her hands away and glared at Layard. “You better have a damn good explanation for this one.” She took off in the direction Bas had headed.

She felt his pain and anger in only a way she could. After the sharing spell, they were connected on a much deeper level. His pain was her pain now. Knowing him, he wouldn’t deal with it very well. She ran through the forest, leaves crunching under her feet, the smell of pine cones filling the air. She scrambled through massive brambles, using magic to part them.

Judging by the footprints and broken twigs Sera knew Bas had gone this way. He seemed to be blocking her out, but she could still sense him. She wished she could fly but her wing hadn’t fully healed yet, so she didn’t dare risk it. Finally, she reached a clearing. The smell of salt water hit her from a huge lake that spread out like a blanket in front of the forest. It sat still as a mirror. Bas stood there, his back to her as he stared off into the distance.

He didn’t move as she wandered over. When she tried to put her arms around him, he shrugged her off. “I don’t want you here.”

“Well, too bad because I am.” Sera crossed arms. “You’re not getting rid of me. You said we shouldn’t shut each other out any more and you were right.”

He glared at her. “Why can’t you just go? You like Layard, see him and leave me the hell alone.”

“Don’t do this. Don’t try pushing me away,” she said. “It won’t work.” She tapped the gold band on her left hand. “You’re stuck with me. Like you said, we have to work through things together.”

“Sometimes people need space, so give me some.” Bastian tried pushing past her, but she grabbed his shoulders and gave him a shove.

“I’ll just follow you.”

“Now I see why my father said marriage is a curse,” he muttered.

“I know you love me so I’ll ignore that.” Sera sighed. “Bas, just talk to me.
